Amazon Brand Academy is an online course created by Luca Davenport that shows you how to make money online by building a private label business and running through Amazon FBA.

Over the past several years, this type of ecommerce has seemed to take off like a rocket with people doing product research on obscure, sub-niche, or trendy products that they believe will be their ticket to financial freedom. 

They get in touch with a private label supplier, slap their own brand and packaging on their product and have it shipped off to Amazon’s warehouse and wait for the money to roll in.

Of course it’s not as easy as all this sounds. 

In fact, to give your Private Label / Amazon FBA business a good start, most course gurus will tell you that you need to invest anywhere from $10,000 to $25,000 in product supply, tools and marketing – and even then it might take as much as 6 months to break even and up to a year to see a profit. 

So, is Private Label with Amazon FBA the right fit for you?

My main goal in this review is to cover the basics of Private Label, give you an overview of what Amazon FBA is and how it works, touch a little bit more on Amazon Brand Academy and Luca Davenport, then wrap everything up with a business model that I believe is killer for 2024. 

Hopefully, when we’re done, you’ll have a good understanding of this type of ecommerce business model and whether or not you should pursue it or take a pass. 

So, with all that out of the way, let’s get going… 

What Is Private Label? 

The idea behind private label is to sell products that are manufactured by a third-party vendor but with your brand name on it. The reason sellers do this is that they’ll have more control over their brand and what they can charge for the products. It basically works like this…

  • You come up with an idea for a product
  • Find a manufacturer to make the product the way you want it
  • Sell the product under your branding

One of the reasons this business model is popular with sellers is that you can offer exclusive products that other sellers don’t, expand your product line, and have higher profit margins compared to selling other brand name products. 

When starting out, it’s crucial that you find a manufacturer that has a good reputation of creating high quality products, once you found them, you’re off to the races. 

After your product has been created and your branding is in place, you’ll need to ship your products to Amazon so that they can do all the heavy lifting (we’ll go over this in a minute), so that managing is easier and you can focus the bulk of your time on growing your business and coming up with new product ideas. 

It’s also important to use Amazon Brand Registry so that you can protect yourself from counterfeit brands and bogus sellers.

  1. Product Research: Find a product that has mass appeal and in high demand.
  2. Choose a Manufacturer: Find a high-quality supplier/manufacturer to develop your product.

What Is Amazon FBA And What Are The Costs? 

Amazon FBA (Fulfillment By Amazon) is a program that Amazon came up with where they take care of all the handling, packing, shipping and customer service issues like returns and refunds. 

Here’s how it works – after you’ve created your business account and shipped them your products, when you have customers who place orders for your products, Amazon boxes everything up and ships the order directly to them for you. 

Now, of course Amazon isn’t doing this out of generosity, there is a cost involved so let’s go over that real quick… 

Amazon FBA Fees

  • Fulfillment: These are the fees for everything involved with shipping your products to your customers, which depend on size and weight.  
    • Small Standard: Fees range from $3.22 – $3.58
    • Large Standard: Fees range from $5.75 – $9.73 + $0.42 for each additional pound. 
  • Storage: This is a monthly fee based on the amount of space your product takes up and is based on the season. 
    • Small Standard: $0.87 per cubic foot (Jan-Sept)… $2.40 per cubic foot (Oct-Dec) 
    • Large Standard: $0.56 per cubic foot (Jan-Sept)… $1.40 per cubic foot (Oct-Dec) 
  • Long Term Storage: Amazon also charges extra for products that have been in their warehouse for over a year – $0.15 per unit or $6.90 per cubic foot, whichever costs more.

Are There Better Ways To Make Money In 2024? 

Personally, I’m not a big fan of Private Label with the Amazon business model, although I have made money with my own successful amazon fba business. My main issue with it is that there is so much competition and many moving pieces. 

Now this isn’t to say that Luca doesn’t have a proven amazon course, because from what I can see, this is one of the best Amazon FBA courses online.

The problem I’ve had with Amazon FBA/Private Label and selling trendy products is that you’re always looking for the next one because typically fads fade over time. 

The problem with evergreen products (products that stick around) is that everyone and their uncle catches on and competition gets crazy.
