First off, I want to say that there is no 100% perfect business model, but you can still make money with just about any model you choose so long as the product or service you offer is legit and your approach to selling them is moral and ethical.
That being said, I’d like to go over some of the basics of Amazon FBA so that you’ll have a good footing of what it’s about.
In essence, Amazon FBA (Fulfillment By Amazon) is a service that Amazon provides in which they store and pack inventory for your business then ship them off whenever a customer places an order.
Along with this, Amazon also takes care of all of your customer service issues like refunds and returns so that you’re not burdened with them. By Amazon taking these issues off your plate, you’re able to spend more time on growing your business instead of the day-to-day operations.
How Much Does This Service Cost?
Although this program seems like a godsend, it’s not free. In fact, given that the profit margins for ecommerce ranges from 5%-20% with 20% considered very good and 5% considered unsustainable.
With that in mind, let’s take a look at how the fees break down:
Fulfillment Fees
These are the fees for all of the picking, packing and shipping of your orders and typically depends on type, size and weight, for example…
- Apparel: These are clothing items (ie, shirts, dresses, pants, shoes, etc.,) and the fulfillment costs can range from about $3.07 to as much as $161.11.
- Non-Apparel: These are just about anything other than clothes (ie, toys, electronics, sports equipment, etc.,) and can range from $3.43 to as high as $161.11.
Inventory Fees
In addition to fulfillment, Amazon also charges you for keeping your inventory which is based on the amount of space your products take up and the season of the year, for example…
- Standard Size:
- From January thru September the fee is $0.75 per cubic foot.
- From October thru December the price jumps to $2.40 per cubic foot.
- Oversize:
- From January thru September the fee is $0.48 per cubic foot.
- From October thru December the price jumps to $1.20 per cubic foot.
There are also additional fees for products that have been in inventory for over a year, which are $0.15 per unit or $6.90 per cubic foot.
Pros
- Ease: Amazon does all the heavy lifting regarding the shipping process which saves you a lot of time.
- Prime: Your orders are eligible for Amazon Prime free shipping (Next-day, Two-Day) which is more appealing to your customers.
- Returns: Amazon takes care of returns and refunds which means you don’t have to deal with the hassle.
Cons
- Cost: These fees can add up, especially for long-term storage, which can eat into your profit margins.
- Control: Since Amazon takes care of the shipping, this removes much of the control the business owner has.
- Competition: Lots of people sell the same product on Amazon, which makes it difficult to stand out.
Tools For Brand Protection
Just to recap, private label branding on Amazon lets you create your own brand and sell products under it. You pick products, often from suppliers like world-class suppliers, and sell them with your brand name. Here’s how Amazon helps you protect and manage your brand:
- Amazon Brand Registry: This helps you manage your brand by giving you tools to protect your brand and remove counterfeit listings. As a brand owner, you can use self-service tools to fight counterfeit products.
- Automated Protections: Amazon uses smart systems to stop counterfeit goods before they cause problems. These systems learn from your reports of fake goods.

So using Amazon FBA isn’t necessarily a bad way to grow your business and reach more customers, especially with all the mundane stuff out of the way – just keep in mind that you need to keep tabs on your inventory so that you’re not hit with a huge bill every month.

Are There Better Ways To Make Money In 2024?

However, competition can be a hard pill to swallow, especially when you’re new to eCommerce, especially with Amazon FBA, and trying to get your feet under you.
It’s not uncommon for seasoned FBA’ers to stake out newbies who hit home runs, and when they do, they copy their products and marketing methods which leaves the newbie holding the bag.
