Amazon FBA (Fulfillment By Amazon) is a service that’s offered through Amazon where instead of you having to take care of storing all your inventory, packing, shipping and handling all the customer service issues for your eCommerce business, you can have Amazon do it for you. 

How Does Amazon FBA Work? 

It basically works like this… as an eCommerce seller you would need to find products for your store, so ordinarily you would buy these from a supplier like Alibaba or AliExpress and they would ship those products to you. But in this case, you would have these products shipped to the Amazon Warehouse and stored there. And since your products are handled by Amazon, they would also be eligible for Amazon Prime, which means that customers are able to get their products much faster, sometimes within the same day. 

How Do You Get Started With Amazon FBA? 

To get started using Amazon FBA, the first thing you would need to do is create an Amazon Seller Account.  After that, you need to create a shipping plan, send you products over to Amazon, and Amazon handles it from that point on. Your products are then listed in the Amazon store and once they start selling, Amazon sends you the money minus their servicing fees. 

How Much Does It Cost To Use Amazon FBA? 

There’s no one simple fee that you pay in order to the FBA service, all the costs vary.  For example:

  • Referral Fees: Amazon charges this fee based on the item sold and the particular category. Usually this fee is around 15%. 
  • Fulfillment Fees: This fee is based on two different categories (Apparel and Non-Apparel). Apparel fees can cost anywhere from $3.43 to $161.11 depending on the size of the clothing. Non-apparel is similar, anywhere from $3.07 to $161.11. 
  • Storage fees: This fee is based on the amount of space that your product takes up in the Amazon Warehouse and can cost you anywhere from $0.48 depending on the season and up to $6.90 if your product has been sitting for more than a year.

  • Easy To Use: Amazon takes care of all the inventory, shipping and handling, which means it saves a lot of time and stress for the seller. 
  • Prime: Your products are eligible for Prime shipping, which means the possibility of more sales. 
  • Scalability: Amazon can handle extremely large orders, which can help your business grow. 


  • Cost: Amazon’s fees can be high, which will cut into your profit margins. 
  • Control: Since Amazon takes care of the shipping processes, you will have less control if something goes wrong. 
  • Inventory: Since your inventory is stored at Amazon, it can be difficult to keep track of it.

Although working with Amazon FBA as an eCommerce seller is a bad deal especially since they take away a lot of the headaches involved with running an online store, In my personal experience, working with such slim profit makes it very difficult to make money. 

Now, I’m not saying that you can’t make money with Amazon FBA, because you can and I absolutely have, but it’s definitely not passive – you’re either always re-ordering new products to make sure that Amazon has enough inventory to process your orders, or you always having to do product research to find new products when your current inventory falls flat. 

Also, don’t get me started on the fact that Amazon is notorious for making note of products that are successful for you, but then sourcing those products themselves and undercutting your price. That’s why I prefer Digital Leasing.
